From MDJ Reports:
Walton regained the Region 5AAAAAA lead by sweeping Pope, holding off a late push by the Greyhounds for a 7-6 win Wednesday. Walton (14-3, 7-1) now has one fewer region loss than Pope (12-6, 8-2), which has played one additional region series.
Momentum in the game went back and forth throughout, with Pope scoring two runs in the top of the fifth inning to tie the score at 5-all. Walton, however, scored a pair of runs in its half of the inning as Tyler Heinrichs doubled to score Michael Guldberg, and Jason Rooks singled to score Heinrichs.
Pope cut its deficit in half in the seventh, as Parker Orr scored on a fielder’s choice with the bases loaded, but Rooks induced a liner to third to end the game.
Heinrichs led the Raiders, going 2-for-3 with a double and home run, while Zac Kristofak was 2-for-2 with an RBI. Rooks also had a home run, with Guldberg and Jason Avers contributing RBIs.
Pierce Smith (6-0) maintained his undefeated record, withstanding 10 hits over five innings, and only two of the five runs he allowed were earned. Rooks entered in the seventh after Connor Haseley ran into trouble and recorded the save.
Orr was 3-for-4 with two doubles and an RBI for the Greyhounds, while Ethan Lawson was 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs. Josh Lowe was 2-for-3 with a double. Walton will resume region play today, hosting Woodstock. Pope will begin a two-game series at Etowah.
